The Risk Profile tool on thinkorswim Desktop is one of the most powerful - and possibly most misunderstood - tools available to options traders. In this video, we take a deep dive into this very different type of chart and show how it can be used to visually dissect an options trade before placing it. Using a real-time example on the thinkorswim PaperMoney platform, you’ll see how the risk profile displays potential profit and loss scenarios for an options trade across price, time, and volatility.

We’ll walk through how an options trader might use this tool to evaluate reward and risk at expiration, compare outcomes at different points before expiration, and understand how changes in implied volatility and time decay can affect a trade’s performance. Along the way, we’ll explore many of the key functions and settings inside the Risk Profile so you can better understand what the chart is telling the trader, and how it might help the trader make more informed options decisions.
