Baba was born in Tripura state, Bangladesh amidst Satlal hills. He left home at a tender age in pursuit of music and studied under several Gurus including Ustad Wazir Khan Saheb, a descendant of Tansen, who became Baba's source of inspiration. Under him, Baba developed a unique style of rendering ragas in Dhrupad Anga.

He mastered over 30 instruments of the string, wind, bow and percussion groups, changed the style of playing Sarod and Sitar and modified them to increase their resonance and bettering their tone quality. He introduced Krintan, Zam-Zama, Bol-Taan, and Taar-Paran in instrumental music as well as conceptualised and perfected a way of rendering Dhrupad style Alap. Till his time, the Gats were generally composed in Teentaal only but he composed Gats in various Talas.

He was not only a performer, but a teacher, composer and conductor. He created many new Ragas, including Hemant, Manj-Khamaj, Hem-Behag and Shubhavati that transcended the boundaries of Gharanas in as much as musicians of various Gharanas now sing/play them.

Baba founded Maihar Gharana and maintained the Guru-Shishya parampara. His disciples include his son Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (sarod), Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar (sitar), and his daughter Padma Bhushan Smt. Annapurna Devi (surbahar), Pandit Pannalal Ghosh (flute), Pandit Timir Baran Bhattacharya (sarod), Padma Bhushan Pandit V.G. Jog (violin) and Padma Bhushan Pandit Nikhil Banerji (sitar).

He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1971, the Padmabhushan in 1958 and Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1952. He was awarded a fellowship of the Akademi in 1954 besides many other honours by different organisations.

Padma Vibhushan Ustad Allauddin Khansaheb, Baba, the blessed son of Shree Sharda Maa stayed at Maihar for over 50 years as a revered Guru of Maihar Maharaja.

He expired on 6th September 1972.
