This was a huge project, and I know it's different from what I usually post, but I hope you understand why I'm posting this!
Well, we are now graduated and onto the next plan that God has in store. Reflecting on the last 17 years of my life, here are some things that I think you should apply to your life.
One thing that I learned is that the people that you grow up with, despite how much time you spend with them, will drift away from you. That’s the pain and also the beauty of graduating. I’m starting to realize that. I may have a lot of friends, but only a few true brothers. If that makes sense.
Embrace the Uncertainty: Don’t be afraid of the road in front of you. It’s normal to be nervous of the upcoming challenge of the “real world.” It should be exciting! Don’t be the person that is too scared to leave their hometown and ends up staying in the same 40 mile radius their whole life. Seek adventure, try to look at things in a new perspective. And understand that there is so much more than a little town you grew up in.
To all the people that are not yet graduated, build relationships. Build a community and create connections with others. Create a bond in that team, that class, that group of friends. Craft a strong relationship before it's too late.
Don’t listen to what anyone says. There will be naysayers and people that say otherwise, but one thing is still held true. You will never meet a single hater that is doing better than you.
Understanding the difference between enjoying your youth and destroying your future, and understanding the happy medium between sacrificing social time vs destroying what you could have done in your youthful days. I have seen way too many kids fall off the right path of life just because they feel they need to conform to what is “cool.” That's absolutely WACK. You can enjoy your youth, build relationships with brothers and grow as an individual without harming the progress of your endeavors.
You’ll never know the value of every moment until it becomes a memory. It’s the little things. So as much as it's easier said than done, try to cherish the moments that seem uneventful or “boring.”
Graduation puts things into perspective that you wouldn’t normally see. Here are the things that I got out of it. They always say that your childhood goes by fast, and that you should cherish the time you have in high school, but you can never truly understand that until you walk out of the school doors for the last time.
I always loved the last day of school. The final bell at 2:20. Watching my friends run out the door. However, this time it’s different. Now I'm 17 years old, enjoying senior sunsets and prom. Watching events I waited my whole life for only existing as memories. I used to love the last days because I knew we'd all see each other again. Same time, same place, same people. But now it’s my last day. And this time, I won't be coming back.
The good times in class, laughing with friends, the best teachers you had, the worst teachers you had. The failed tests, the projects. The lunch table that you took for granted.
Big Thanks to Jackson “Shoe” Scrivens for sending me some VHS clips from prom!
Big Thanks to Wyatt Nabozny for sending me TONS of VHS clips from the track and field season!
Big Thanks to Bode Cooper for sending old footage, and camcorder clips from this year!
