A heavy "greyhound" comb is my favourite tool for removing dead coat. A comb should slide freely through a coat, if not, try line combing to remove dead shedding coat. Once your dog is free of matting, their coat insulates them better from heat or cold, it allows skin to breathe and you can avoid some skin issues from moisture and itching.
