Ford built an engine so powerful that NASCAR banned it before it ever turned a single lap. The Ford 427 SOHC better known as the Cammer was a 600+ horsepower monster designed in 1964 to destroy Chrysler’s 426 Hemi and bring Ford back to the top of stock car racing. It revved higher, breathed better, and made every pushrod engine of the era look prehistoric.
The 427 SOHC never raced in the Cup Series, but its legacy refused to die. Ford boycotted NASCAR for the entire 1965 season in protest, while the Cammer became a drag-racing legend powering Funny Cars, Top Fuel rails, and match race heroes like Connie Kalitta to record-breaking runs. Even today, surviving Cammers sell for over $100,000 and remain symbols of the greatest what if in American motorsports.
