Shot in the mid 1980's, Norton Harvesters operated approx 12 pea harvesters of various models and ages, in the days prior to Simplot ownership of the Edgells brand.
One machine was on what I think was its last season (39), which was an ongoing battle for the operator at the time.
The season used to begin in Queensland, move to Victoria then Tasmania. All Simplot peas are now grown in Tasmania, averaging around 23 000 tonnes.
Pea harvesters, like most things, have come along way since those days, being significantly more reliable, efficient and operator friendly.
Up until the late 1960's, Tasmania had numerous fixed 'pea viner stations', which saw the entire pea crop (vines and all) carted to these 'stations'
Then along came tractor drawn mobile harvesters which were then replaced by self propelled machines in about the mid 1970's.
