Do The Weapons of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) Hold Up in 2026?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 was rather polarising- you either loved it, or you hated it. Or you thought it was okay. I’m sort of in the third category. The storyline and setting was trying to be more realistic but they got some various historical events wrong (the Highway of Death was committed by Americans, not Russians, and was not a war crime). For every really effective moment, like the mission where you clear out a townhouse in a very realistic and dark moment, there’s a dumb moment like where Alex sacrifices himself for no reason even though they are not under a time crunch and could just call in an air strike to blow up the factory at any time.

I’m not here to criticise the story, not in this video at least, but in addition to and as part of the realism of this game, there also was the gunsmith mechanic which has become a staple for the 5 subsequent entries in the franchise. With this mechanic, players could customise their guns in great detail, adding up to 5 attachments of various kinds. This tracks with real life, where guns have been becoming far more modular. However, the devs really started to change the names of guns in these games from their real life counterparts, and would add all sorts of things on the guns to make them legally distinct. This was the first sign of the infection, and since one of the commenters on the Battlefield 4 series asked me to analyse this game, I feel obligated to take note of how it started, and then compare it to the original Modern Warfare, which is fitting because COD 4 AKA OG Modern Warfare takes place mostly in 2011, so this year is 15 years past that date.
