How to Install & Use AutoAqua's Titanium TDS Meters to Monitor the Performance of Your RO/DI System

How clean is your RODI water? Do you find yourself guesstimating when it is time to change the filters?

Our #1 job as hoybbists is to maintain water quality. This starts by making sure that the very water we use to make up our saltwater, is filtered efficiently and contains no undesired elements such as phosphates and silicates.

One way to filter water is by using an RODI machine. This machine uses a combination of filtering media to strip all elements from the water. While the RODI filter has a color changing resin that will generally tell you when the media is exhausted, unless a TDS meter is installed, we find ourselves guessing when to replace the filter.

TDS meters work by measuring the electrical conductivity of elements/solids in the water. The more solids in the water, the higher the ability for electricity to travel from one titanium rod to the other.

With a TDS meter, we can monitor our RO filter, DI Resin and know exactly when it is time to replace them. The TDS meter not only allows you to keep the RODI unit running in optimal conditions but also allows you to squeeze ever bit of time out of the filtering membranes before discarding.

AutoAqua, the company that brought you the revolutionary Smart ATO and Smart ATO micro has released a new line on inline digital TDS meters. These meters can be installed before or after the filter to monitor its efficiency.

If you want to monitor your RO membrane, install the filter right after it and monitor when the membrane becomes exhausted. If you are trying to know exactly when your DI resin needs replacing, just install the TDS member right after it and monitor your water output. Anything above 0 indicates a need for replacement.

The AutoAqua Inline TDS meter comes equipped with one, two or three sensing probes.

The Titanium One model is the smallest of all and is a single titanium probe sensor that comes with a ¼” push connect Tee. The monitor and probe are one piece without an extension rod making it very easy to install without managing cables.

The Titanium S1 model is a single titanium probe sensor with 24in long cable that comes with a ¼” push connect Tee. It can be installed inline and monitor the efficiency of any filter it is attached to.

The Titanium S2 model is a dual titanium probe sensors with 24in long cables that comes with 2 ¼” push connect Tees. It can be installed inline and measure contaminants from two different locations. You can measure the RO membrane output as well as the DI resin.

The Titanium S3 model is a triple titanium probe sensor with 24in long cables that comes with 3 ¼” push connect Tees. It can be installed inline and measure contaminants from 3 separate sources via a single monitor unit.

To assemble the TDS meters, simply insert the probe into one of the push-connect Tee fittings. It is important that the two-prong sensor at the end of the probe is perpendicular to the water flow so that both titanium rods have equal contact with water to ensure an accurate reading.

If all you are looking for is to monitor your RO membrane, then the Titanium
One or Titanium S1 is the right product for you. On an RODI unit, find the output line between your RO membrane and your DI Resin. Trim near the RO output and install the TDS meter Tee.

If you are looking to monitor your RO membrane and your DI resin, then the Titanium S2 meter is the one you need. Find the DI output line and install the second sensor there.

If you are looking to monitor your RO membrane, DI Resin and the quality of your tap water, then the Titanium S3 model is the winner. Trim the water input line before your entire RODI unit and install the Tee there.

To turn ON the meter, just press and release the front button. To turn it OFF manually, just press and hold the center button until the meter shuts OFF. If you forget to turn it OFF, the unit will turn OFF automatically after 3 minutes of idle time.

Maintenance on the TDS meters is very simple. Just remove the probe from the Tee and clean the two titanium rods using alcohol swabs or citric acid. When reinstalling the probe, make sure that the two-prong sensor is perpendicular to the water flow to ensure accuracy.

A CR2032 battery powers the TDS meters, so we recommend changing it once every year.

They also come factory calibrated at 342ppm and should remain consistent for some time. To ensure accuracy after prolonged use, we do recommend recalibrating them using commercial standards NaCl based solution.

To calibrate, place the unit in calibration fluid , then press the front center button twice until the “ppm” text start to flash in the display. You now can use the plus and minus buttons on the back to make the adjustment. When done calibrating, press the front button once to exit calibration mode.
