On Day 29 of our summer journey, we depart from Xining, Qinghai province, and board a train bound for Dunhuang. The 935 km journey, transitioning from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, offers a scenic ride with changing landscapes. As we approach Dunhuang, a city renowned for its desert surroundings and record-setting tourist numbers, we notice a stark contrast from Xining's cooler climate to Dunhuang's hot, dry conditions.

Upon arrival, we dive into Dunhuang's night market, sampling camel meat kebabs and local delicacies. The market, bustling with activity, highlights Dunhuang's role as a cultural crossroads. The next day, we visit key sites including the Yangguan and Yumen Passes, and experience the unique formations of Yardan Devil City.
