Learning to navigate college can be a challenge for any student. But what happens when death and grief become a part of the academic journey? In this talk, Darcy Staniforth Anderson shares about the grief experience as a college student and discusses why as educators, we need to better learn how to serve our college students in a death and grief avoidant culture. Darcy Staniforth Anderson is an academic, lecturer, program coordinator, advisor, writer, and performer. She combines her own educational experiences as a low-income, first-generation, adult re-entry transfer student, along with her academic research to build connections and communities both inside and outside of higher education. Darcy holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in American Studies from Cal State University, Fullerton and her research areas include race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, ideals and institutions, and death, dying, and grief in American culture. When she is not serving her students and her community, Darcy enjoys spending time with her family and friends, practicing magic, podcasting, and writing for Cinema Sentries. She also loves reading, comedy, and collecting jewelry and action figures This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
