Composed in 1785, the Fantasia in C minor, K. 475 is one of Mozart’s most dramatic and forward-looking keyboard works. Written in the key of C minor—a key often associated with turmoil and intensity—this fantasia reveals Mozart’s mastery of contrast and musical narrative.

True to the fantasia form, the piece unfolds in an unpredictable, almost improvisatory manner, moving through a series of contrasting sections and moods. The work opens with a slow, mysterious theme marked by wide leaps and harmonic tension. This gives way to a stormy, dramatic passage, full of rapid arpeggios and dark, brooding harmonies. Throughout the piece, Mozart alternates between lyrical introspection and intense, urgent energy.

The fantasia is notable for its harmonic adventurousness, including surprising modulations and chromaticism. It also foreshadows the emotional depth and complexity of the Romantic era. Often performed alongside Mozart’s Sonata in C minor, K. 457, the Fantasia in C minor stands as one of his greatest achievements for solo piano, captivating audiences with its raw emotional power and structural freedom.
