How To Prune & Train Climbing Roses 🌹✂️🎋

In today’s video I’m pruning and training two climbing rose varieties - Paul’s Scarlett and Santana - both beautiful red climbing roses, both of which I planted in containers around March or April last year.

So therefore this is the first time they’ve had a proper prune and I’ve made sure to research how to correctly prune and train them by watching a lot of good YouTube videos from experienced gardeners and now I feel confident enough to tackle this process.

Following the principle that the main canes need to be coached into horizontal, or at least 45 degree angles, I’m pruning off all lateral side shoots from the main canes, teasing them into their new positions, and now when the lateral shoots grow from the main stems, these will grow vertically and produce (I hope) an abundance of beautiful new roses this coming year.

It’s important to remember that you don’t ever cut the main stems shorter each year. These are left to continue growing, and as they do, you can keep training them up the trellis and tying them in as well.
