This webinar gives a short introduction into the Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) as well as into the basics and long-distance applications of distributed fiber-optic sensing (DFOS). We show how Raman, Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering are used for distributed temperature (DTS), strain (DSS) and acoustic sensing (DAS). Major application areas of long distance DFOS are pipeline, offshore well, power cable and transport monitoring as well as third party intrusion and security at borders and fences. Then, technologies are presented that enable long distance DFOS (low loss and engineered fibers, coherent detection, correlation techniques, optical amplification, anti-fading techniques and remote circulator). Lab demonstration data show the potential of those techniques for reaching very long distances in DFOS. Finally, some case studies show examples of long distance DFOS in field applications.
Presented by Dr. Wieland Hill, Chairman of FOSA Technology Committee, Director of Advanced Sensing at NKT Photonics. Dr. Hill has long-term experience in academic research as well as in the industrial development of lasers, micro-optics and instruments for fiber-optic sensing, notably with Lambda Physik, LIMO, JENOPTIK and research centers in Germany, Austria, Ukraine and Russia. He joined LIOS Technology (now part of NKT Photonics) as CTO in 2007. His current activities include distributed temperature, strain and acoustic sensing as well as real-time thermal rating of power cables. He is the 2021 Chairman of the FOSA Technology Committee.
