According to the Austin Police Department, On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at approximately 12:40 a.m., Austin Police officers conducted a traffic stop in the 800 block of East Braker Lane. Officers approached the vehicle which had a female driver, a male passenger and a young child inside.

The male passenger later identified as Branson Berreles 26 years old was asked to step out of the vehicle. Berreles stepped out of the vehicle, and as officers attempted to pat him down, he pushed through officers and attempted to evade on foot. Police said when officers went to reach for him, he turned, took a sideways or “bladed” stance, and reached for a firearm.


At approximately 12:41 a.m., Officer Jake Pitcher and Officer Ryne Kirchberg fired shots and struck Berreles.

The officers approached Berreles to safely restrain him and begin life-saving measures. Officers searched Berreles and located a firearm in the area where he had been reaching.

Police said officers also located multiple magazines on his person. Berreles was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and underwent surgery.

At this time, charges against Berreles are pending. The specific charges to be filed remain under investigation.

No other individuals, including the female driver, the young child, or the officers, were injured in the incident. Police said.
