PIÑATA is an object in the shape of an animal, cartoon characters etc. filled with candies and toys and is broken as a part of a party or ceremony. It is hung up at parties and children hit it with sticks or pull the string to break it open and release the treats. In the Philippines, Piñata is a modern version of pokpok palayok or pabitin.
HOW TO PLAY PIÑATA?
1. Attach the piñata to a tree branch, beam, climbing frame or any other suitable hanging place.
2. Place the piñata at a height that will allow it to swing freely and where the guests can reach it with the stick.
3. gather the guests around the piñata. For safety and fairness, have them form a circle that’s a safe distance from the piñata. This way when someone is swinging it no one gets hurt.
A circle formation let’s everyone watch and participate in the game. And when the piñata breaks, no one feels like they can’t grab at least some goodies.
4. Start with the birthday child. Blindfold him (if desired) and give him the hitting stick. Bring them within about 3 feet of the piñata and ask them to try and hit it with the aim of breaking it. Older kids could also be turned around a couple of times on the spot so that they are a bit disoriented. This makes it harder for them to know where the piñata is. Don't let the children who are waiting move forward towards the hitter, as a blindfolded child with a swinging bat can be quite dangerous.
5. Continue around the circle, giving each child a chance to hit. When something comes out of the piñata, the players can dash to grab it.
Normally people are a bit unsure and timid at first, but once they get the hang of it there's no stopping them!
6. As soon as the piñata breaks open and the treats shower down, the children can scramble to pick up the goodies.
• Don’t Forget the Treat Bags
When setting up your piñata game, one thing not to forget is the treat bags. A simple paper lunch sack will do. Or choose more decorative paper bags or plastic cello bags. Before you begin the piñata game, hand each child a bag. Be sure to write their name on it too so no one’s treats get mixed up.
It can turn into quite a scramble, which can be a bit frightening for the younger children, so make sure that you have a bit of control over the scramble and that everyone gets their fair share of treats.
Disclaimer: making piñata takes time, and not that easy as it looks like. It takes time, effort, lot of patience, creativity, imagination and handcraft skills to make one but if I can do it I'm sure you can too. Please Do It at your own risk.
