Django Unchained by legendary filmmaker Quinten Tarantino is far more than just a revenge tale; it’s a visceral reckoning with the horrors of slavery, crafted through the lens of an unflinching, genre-bending spaghetti Western. For Black audiences, the experience of watching Django can be profoundly layered—equal parts cathartic, from watching cruel and unempathetic racists get their just desserts, and unsettling within watching the almost surreal but very accurate treatment of black people during the slave trade era within the united states in the mid 1800s. It’s rare to see a Black hero like Django, played masterfully by Jamie Foxx, reclaim agency in a historical narrative that often relegates Black characters to literal livestock. I hated emancipation by Will Smith, and fun fact he brags about turning down this movie. It was very refreshing to reminisce upon Jamie Foxx’s earth shattering performance. Foxx, known primarily for his comedy and drama roles such as Booty call, The Jamie Foxx show, Dreamgirls, stealth and perhaps his most quintessential Drama movie if you’re not into gore would be Ray: a movie I seen in theaters as a young man sticks with me to this day, for which he won best actor. Foxx’s means of commitment to his roles was beautiful. To see him get killed off so quickly in stealth truly pissed me off and I think he was born to play this role for his redemption in my eyes as a King.
