The Ghosts of Northern State Mental Hosptial. Washington State

Northern State Mental Hospital, located near Sedro-Woolley, Washington, has a tragic and complex history that reflects the broader story of mental health care in the United States during the 20th century.

Opened in 1912, Northern State was once one of the largest mental health institutions in the state. At its peak, it housed over 2,000 patients. While originally designed as a progressive facility offering therapeutic work, such as farming and craftsmanship, the hospital eventually became overcrowded, underfunded, and burdened with outdated treatments.

Tragically, like many asylums of its era, patients were often subjected to inhumane conditions and experimental procedures such as lobotomies, electroshock therapy, and forced sterilizations. Many individuals were institutionalized for reasons that today would be considered non-medical, such as developmental disabilities, depression, or even nonconformity.

Hundreds of patients died at the hospital, and many were buried in unmarked graves on the hospital grounds. The institution officially closed in 1973, and its legacy remains a haunting reminder of a darker chapter in mental health care.

Today, parts of the facility are used for other purposes, but much of it remains abandoned, fueling ghost stories and urban legends.
