In general, the relative risk is calculated by dividing the risk of two different groups. The risk of the group with the particular characteristic is usually presented as the numerator of a fraction. This group is called the exposed group. The relative risk is calculated as the risk of disease in an exposed group divided by the risk of disease in a nonexposed group.
