As 1972 dawns on the Street, Maggie (Irene Sutcliffe) and Lucille (Jennifer Moss) kick off the year by deciding to clear the shop's accounts. Annie (Doris Speed) has lost her handbag but had an enjoyable evening. Hilda (Jean Alexander) keeps herself occupied by gossiping about Elsie (Pat Phoenix) and Alan (Alan Browning). Elsie believes he might be with Janet Reid (Judith Barker). Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) is called upon to care for her Auntie May. Gerald Prince (David Davies) calls into the Rovers with Annie's handbag in front of a jealous Nellie Harvey (Mollie Sugden) and Kitty Stonely (Stella Moray). During the night, Billy Walker (Kenneth Farrington) returns from London after 6 months away and discovers Alan is sleeping at the Garage.
