Overview
Fort Gorazda is a significant Austro-Hungarian fortress constructed between 1884 and 1886, located at an altitude of 452 meters on Goražde Hill, overlooking the picturesque Kotor, Montenegro. This formidable structure replaced an earlier fort built prior to the 1869 uprising and is renowned for hosting a unique 100-ton Gruson rotating turret on its roof—the last of its kind still in existence. The fort's design features a symmetrical layout, consisting of two wings connected by a circular central area, surrounded by a deep defensive ditch equipped with caponiers for close-quarter combat.

Strategic Role
Strategically positioned, Fort Gorazda controlled the critical Kotor-Cetinje road and, alongside the Kavač Battery, safeguarded Tivat port. It played a vital role in targeting enemy positions, such as the Krstac battery located on the Lovćen Mountain range. During World War I, the fort withstood intense artillery bombardment from Montenegrin forces stationed on Lovćen, with shells reaching calibers of up to 24 cm. Remarkably, despite the heavy shelling, Fort Gorazda sustained minimal damage. In 1915, the Austrians reinforced their defenses by adding infantry positions to the roof. This upgrade proved crucial as they successfully repelled Montenegrin attacks in 1916. Following the war, the fort was repurposed as a depot for the Yugoslav Army until the 1990s, after which it fell into abandonment but later became accessible to the public.

Visitors to Fort Gorazda can explore remnants of its historical past, including the intricate rotating dome mechanism, machine gun nests, armored casemates, and a specialized elevator used for transporting ammunition from storage areas to the cannons. The internal layout of the fort is a labyrinth of long corridors, spacious chambers, and numerous staircases linking the roof to the lower levels, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the Kotor and Tivat Bays. Guests can access the fort via unmarked trails leading from the main road; it has become a favored hiking destination, particularly for those seeking stunning sunset vistas. However, visitors should exercise caution due to its secluded and rugged terrain.

During my visit, the mesmerizing views from the fort left me spellbound. The breathtaking panorama was so enchanting that I found myself rooted to the spot, utterly captivated, unable to tear myself away from the stunning landscape before me. It truly felt like a slice of heaven, where time stood still, and all I could do was be in awe of the natural beauty surrounding me.
