Today we're in the process of making some haylage.
We've cut one of our herbal leys (which are slightly different to your standard grass ley) which is made up of a variety of plant species; different grasses, legumes and herbs.
This variety of plant species comes with lots of benefits. It will produce more flowers which make great pollinators for bees, butterflies, etc and also will improve soil structure, soil health and fertility.
Once bailed up and wrapped, we'll be storing it over winter to feed to our ewes carrying single lambs rather than feeding them a concentrate feed.
Herbal ley also makes for really great grazing for the sheep. Once we've got this cleared and the plant species have started to grow back again, we'll be turning some weaned lambs onto here which comes with lots of benefits for them. It acts as a natural wormer and also helps sustain good daily live weight gain.
