The Ōnin War marks the collapse of central authority in Japan, following a fierce succession dispute within the Ashikaga Shogunate and powerful Daimyō families. For over ten years, the fighting devastated the capital of Kyoto, without either side being able to achieve a decisive victory. This political decay rendered the central government virtually powerless, shifting local control to regional warlords. This began the era of the "Warring States" (Sengoku Jidai), a period of permanent civil wars and social upheaval lasting over a century.
