Home Makeover Inspiration: Inside a 1924 Tudor Revival Home Renovation

When a historian and an archivist left New York City for Louisville, Kentucky, during the pandemic with their new baby, they aimed to settle in a historic home. Their quest led them to a charming 1924 Tudor revival with strong architectural foundations. However, decades of design choices from the 1980s and '90s had obscured its historic charm, limited natural light, and disrupted the flow of the house. They sought assistance to restore its original character.

The original blueprints included in the purchase of the home facilitated the designer in creating congruence between the house's distinguishing characteristics and the comfortable, contemporary aesthetic the couple was aiming for.

The clunky '90s-style doors and windows at the back of the house were replaced with steel-frame Crittall windows, a signature style of many 1920s residences that allows natural light through glass panes. The wood-frame Tudor-style doors and windows, along with their stained glass, were preserved to maintain the period charm. Additionally, original flooring was refinished throughout the home, except in the kitchen and breakfast room, where dark cherry wood planks were swapped for Belgian terra-cotta star and cross tiles, creating a period-appropriate aesthetic.
