Giving Back: Mural Complete!

At Nanosys, we create quantum dot technology. There's a lot of art to what we do here, to create the brightest, highest quality color displays for in-home entertainment. This year, for SID's 2020 Display Week Virtual Conference, we've decided to give back to the community we serve.

Oakland has been undergoing something of an artistic Renaissance over the past month, with hundreds of murals depicting social justice motifs and positive messages of empowerment popping up everywhere. The city has evolved into what feels like an outdoor art gallery, and murals can be found stretching for miles across the city. This is a critical point in history, which has the potential to inspire an entirely new generation of artists and young people dedicated to fighting for social change.

Nanosys is proud to sponsor Dragon School's latest project—a mural painting by a local artist in Uptown Oakland. The mural is situated on a stretch of wall right off of a busy street (Broadway Avenue) that has undergone significant urban renewal over the past few years. During this time, many businesses have also shuttered their doors, often building tensions between new and old residents. We see this as an opportunity to help give Oakland artists a voice so they can remind others of the importance of working together to unify and beautify their neighborhood, especially difficult times of financial crisis and social inequity.

Dragon School, a local non-profit that harnesses the creative power of youth to create community murals throughout the Oakland area. Dragon School's approach to community development re-imagines the neighborhood as a shared cultural experience, using art as the universal language. Their organization is growing, branching out to neighboring cities and working with more artists than ever before—many of which are young women muralists, from historically underserved communities.

We also see this as a chance to demonstrate how companies can make good on their promise to give back. By helping to fund and work with community development organizations right there in the local community where their customers are, companies are able to have a more sustainable impact on the lives of local residents.
