Instrumental Insemination of Queen Honeybees

An introductory video to instrumental insemination of queen honeybees, a useful tool for breeding better bees. It also allows for selection on both the drone and queen lines. This is useful for breeding in specific traits such as VSH and hygienic behaviors which are expressed through recessive genes.

In this video we use our 1.02 Instrumental insemination unit with our Harbo syringe kit for the insemination procedure. During semen collection we use a semen collection station to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination.

To record the close-ups under the microscope, we used our trinocular stereo microscope with a microscope camera. This microscope is equipped with a 0.5X barlow lens to increase the working height and provide adequate room for the insemination unit.
