Nigeria's history spans from early civilizations like the Nok culture (c. 1500 BC) to the rise of powerful kingdoms and empires such as the Benin, Oyo, and Hausa states. After a period of intense Transatlantic slave trade and the Fula jihads leading to the Sokoto Caliphate, the area came under British colonial rule in the 19th century, formally becoming the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria in 1914. Nigeria gained independence on October 1, 1960, but experienced subsequent military rule and a civil war, ultimately achieving a stable democratic government by 1999.
