Building your conventional deadlift with the deficit deadlift is excellent in developing greater force production off the floor in that you are prompted to drive from the legs by virtue of lowering the hips. A typical deficit is about 2" but enough to ensure more knee and hip flexion to sink the lifter's hips into the optimal start position. Mastering leg drive or "pushing the floor away" will ensure a stronger lock out at the top of the movement as very often, failing to lock out is a result of technique breakdown or the hips rising too early at the start of the lift.
