Hydroponics has become increasingly popular for home gardening, and it has also proven to be successful at a commercial level. However, newcomers to this field often find themselves confused about how to start with hydroponics, what equipment to acquire, and how to install a fully functional system.
So, in today's video, we will be discussing the essential equipment needed to build a hydroponic system.
When planting in a hydroponic setup, there are three basic components required:
1.Container
2.Water
3.Seed or seedling
Containers are required to hold the plant and nutrient solution together in a hydroponic system. These containers can come in various types, such as simple PVC pipes, plastic containers, plastic grow bags, or chambers.
The next component is water, which is used to provide nutrition to the plants in hydroponic systems. Hydroponic systems typically have two separate water reservoirs. One is the main collecting water reservoir where water is stored in bulk, and the other is the feeding tank from which water is directly supplied to the containers or chambers.
Next comes the process of planting or using seedlings. Regardless of the type of farming technique, plants are always started from the seed stage.
In hydroponic systems, the growing medium is used to provide support to the roots and helps distribute the nutrient solution.
There are mainly two types of growing mediums used in hydroponics: inert and non-inert. Inert growing mediums only provide support and cannot provide any nutrition. Common examples of inert growing mediums are rockwool or perlite.
On the other hand, non-inert mediums such as coco-coir or peat moss provide support as well as some level of nutrition.
Plants require adequate light for photosynthesis to occur. For this, plants can either be placed in a location where they receive direct sunlight, or use artificial lighting to fulfil their light requirements.
Air pumps can also be used to provide oxygen to the plants. Additionally, if the water reservoirs are placed at a slightly elevated height, when the water falls from the height into the feeding tank, it naturally gets aerated, eliminating the need for air pumps.
However, in controlled environments, the use of multiple equipment can sometimes result in an increase in temperature and humidity. To address this, coolers or large circulation fans can be installed to help regulate the temperature and ensure proper air circulation.
Also, monitoring is an essential aspect of hydroponic systems to ensure successful operation. This can be achieved with the help of pH metres that are used to monitor and maintain the pH levels of the water, while TDS metres measure the concentration of dissolved solids, including nutrients, in the water. Additionally, EC metres are used to regulate the electrical conductivity of the solution, which is a measure of its nutrient concentration.
In conclusion, these are the basic required equipment to set up a basic hydroponic system and how with the help of these equipment, one can create a fully functional hydroponic system and grow crops without using any soil.
