San Remo, a coastal fishing town in Victoria, Australia, is well-known for its daily gathering of Australian Pelicans along the foreshore near the jetty. These wild pelicans have become a local attraction because they regularly visit the area expecting food provided by the San Remo Fisherman’s Co-op. The setting combines traditional fishing culture with a relaxed seaside atmosphere, making the pelicans a signature feature of the town.
Every day at 12:00 noon, the Fisherman’s Co-op hosts a free pelican-feeding session that draws families, tourists, and wildlife enthusiasts. During these sessions, anywhere between 5–35 pelicans may arrive, and visitors often enjoy short educational talks about the birds, marine ecology, and local fishing practices. The surrounding area — including the jetty, the Phillip Island bridge, and nearby seafood outlets — adds to the experience.
The San Remo pelicans have become a beloved icon due to their size, behaviour, and dramatic presence along the waterfront. Visitors typically arrive early to watch the pelicans gather, take photos, and enjoy the scenic coastal landscape. Along with pelican-watching, people often explore nearby shops, observe stingrays around the jetty, or enjoy fresh fish and chips, making the pelican-feeding tradition a highlight of the town’s tourism and community identity.
