What is a story premise, really? Jessica Brody breaks it down in a way that finally clicks.
Premise isn’t just your logline, and it isn’t just your theme. It’s the spark created when your Act 1 character crashes into your Act 2 world, and the contrast between who they are and where they land creates immediate tension, conflict, and curiosity. She uses The Midnight Library as a perfect example, showing why a character full of doubt and regret makes the “what if I lived differently?” world explode with intrigue. Without that contrast, there’s no premise at all.
If you’re outlining your novel or trying to strengthen Act 2, this video shows you how to intentionally design character + world so that when they merge, the story ignites. That’s premise. That’s fireworks. That’s the engine that powers your Fun and Games beat and everything that follows.
