6 Best Hikes in the Canary Islands 🇪🇸

Hiking in the Canary Islands in Spain. I took my wife on a hiking road trip to the Canary Islands, one of the Macaronesian isles, belonging to Spain. After extensive research, my pick of the 6 best hikes in the Canary Islands included trails in Tenerife and La Palma.

Part of our plan was to climb Mount Teide in Teide National Park, but the day we had the permit for, the trail and cable car got closed due to heavy winds and we had to skip this hike. But here's some useful info for those who were not able to get the permit as it usually is fully booked 3-4 months in advance: You can also apply for the early morning (6-9 AM) and late night (6-10 PM) hike which, as far as I have seen, has always free spots. If you do the early climb, you have to access the peak section between 6 and 9 AM, meaning you can catch the first cable car down at 9 AM, skipping the 9km descent. This, however, means, you'll have to get back to your car parking at the Sendero de Montana Blanca trailhead, located 3km from the cable car station. Hitchhiking is the best option here, so prepare a little sign, as walking along the road is dangerous, as it is winding and has no shoulders at all (we drove the route and realised it would not be wise to walk there). If you do the early morning hike on a clear day, you'll also be able to see the huge Teide shadow, which is supposed to be the largest one in the world! In order to get the permits for both the morning and evening hikes, you have to know how to navigate in the official website which is the trickiest part (this I could figure out for too long until it was too late!). Here's how you do it:

2. Click on LIST OF ACTIVITIES

3. Instead of clicking on the obvious first option PICO DEL TEIDE ACCESS PERMIT, select one of the last two – either this for the morning hike:

ACTIVIDAD MONTAÑERA - ACCESO AL SENDERO TELESFORO BRAVO DE 6:00 A 9:00H (AMANECER DESDE EL PICO TEIDE) - FUERA DEL HORARIO DE SERVICIO DEL TELEFÉRICO

...or this for the evening hike:

ACTIVIDAD MONTAÑERA - ACCESO SENDERO TELESFORO BRAVO DE 18:00 A 22:00H (ATARDECER DESDE EL PICO TEIDE) - FUERA DEL HORARIO DE SERVICIO DEL TELEFÉRICO

4. Only then click on the second tab BOOKINGS and select your desired date.
