This video demonstrates the temperature dependence of a semiconductor's bandgap energy and its direct effect on the color of light emitted by an LED. Since the photon energy of the emitted light corresponds closely to the bandgap energy of the semiconductor material, changes in temperature cause measurable shifts in the LED's emission wavelength-and thus its color. As the temperature increases, the bandgap energy typically decreases, resulting in a shift toward longer wavelengths (a redshift), while cooling causes the opposite effect. This experiment visually illustrates how fundamental semiconductor properties respond to temperature variations, providing valuable insights for applications where color stability and performance of LEDs under varying conditions are critical.
