Why Palpatine NEVER Trusted Darth Bane's Rule of 2

For generations, the Sith adhered to the Rule of Two—master and apprentice, no more, no less. But Palpatine was never content to follow a tradition he considered obsolete. While Darth Bane’s doctrine was designed to ensure the Sith’s survival through secrecy and patience, Palpatine envisioned something far more audacious: total, permanent domination of the galaxy—and of the dark side itself.

Many believe Palpatine’s countless schemes and hidden apprentices were simply a symptom of his paranoia. Yet there is a deeper possibility: that he saw the Rule of Two as a limitation, a relic of weaker Sith who feared betrayal more than they craved power. By training Inquisitors, manipulating Maul and Dooku, and even preparing replacements for Vader, Palpatine revealed his true philosophy—one that placed his own ascension above any ancient code.

In rejecting Bane’s legacy, he did more than break tradition. He betrayed the very foundation of the Sith Order, setting in motion events that would ultimately destroy them. In the end, Palpatine’s arrogance ensured that no Sith would ever rise to challenge him—and no Sith would remain to inherit his throne.
