Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a 1998 Hindi-language comedy romance film . It was written and directed by Karan Johar and starred popular on-screen couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in their fourth film together. Rani Mukerji played a supporting role, while Salman Khan also had an extended special appearance. The film marked the debut of Sana Saeed , who played a supporting role.
It was Karan Johar's directorial debut. The film was a success in India and overseas and became the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. It also became the second highest-grossing Indian film after Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge . Outside India, it was the highest-grossing film of all time before the record was broken by Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham .
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai received positive reviews from critics. Particular praise went to Kajol's performance. The soundtrack also became the biggest seller of the year. The film won the "Best Film" award at the Filmfare Awards , Zee Cine Awards and Star Screen Awards .
