In this video, I covered this new research called GPEN (GAN Prior Embedded Network). It can restore, upscale, and enhance extremely degraded and pixelated human faces, as long as there's a clear silhouette around the profile view. This is just extremely helpful in restoring super old images which includes faces that other research has yet to achieve. It is a state of the art extreme degraded faces upscaler without a doubt. However, it still faces fierce competitions against face upscaling that is a lot less degraded...
Fun fact, the guy in a top hat (1:27) is sent in from viewer requested to be upscaled and restored. I've kept it for over 6+ months as a baseline to test the face upscaling functionalities, and GPEN is the only one that I had success in!
