Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs' Weekly Update

It’s Friday. Time for another weekly update.

This week, I attended the ribbon cutting at Crawford Electric Supply’s grand reopening and dropped by the grand opening of the new 5/3rd Bank branch in Turkey Creek. One of the best things about being mayor is seeing new business, and the jobs they create, pop up in our county.

I also welcomed the fall conference of the Tennessee District Attorneys to town at the Convention Center.

On Tuesday, we unveiled a memorial to honor the life and sacrifice of Knox County Sheriff’s Officer Deputy Tucker Blakely. Deputy Blakely was killed in the line of duty in early October 2023. His loss was a blow to our entire community. Tucker devoted his life to service. Not only was he a deputy, but he was also an Army veteran, serving as a reservist and combat medic. Tucker had an infectious smile, and his fellow deputies described him as a great guy and teammate. This memorial will not ease the pain of his loved ones and colleagues, but it will ensure that his courage, service, and sacrifice will not be forgotten. The memorial is located at the corner of West Emory and Brickyard Roads in Powell, not far from the bridge dedicated in his honor.

The East Tennessee History Center is holding a genealogy conference November 7-9. This free event is dedicated to exploring our region’s rich genealogical and historical roots, bringing together genealogists, historians, researchers, and regional partners for an immersive experience in family history and archival discovery. In case you missed it, Zoo Knoxville’s 34-year-old chimpanzee, Lu, continues to progress well following his historic surgery. Last month, doctors at UT’s College of Veterinary Medicine removed a tumor from Lu’s spine. The tumor was benign, and Lu has suffered no setbacks during his recovery. The Zoo says he should be ready to join his troop soon and see everyone’s smiling faces again, so we all wish him a speedy recovery!
