String bending: you love to hear it, now it's time to learn how to do it right. So grab your guitar and let Paul Gilbert show you how it's done!

Bending strings is just about the coolest thing you can do on an electric guitar! The string we bend in the lesson is the G string. Gilbert bends up towards the sky. Paul Gilbert has one finger per fret and he pushes up with all of those three fingers, using his wrist. The fulcrum is the first joint of the first finger. That joint touches the bottom of the neck, that way, when you pull up with the three fingers, you create that pulled note.

It's helpful to have calluses when bending strings. If you don't have one already, no worries. Paul Gilbert has been playing for many years. You will develop the calluses to help you bend strings by practicing string bending.

In the lesson, Paul Gilbert also shows a few combinations where you would be able to use string bending. At the beginning, just do the bends slowly, getting a slow, even rise in pitch. An important thing to note is the direction you pull in: Gilbert pulls down on the lower strings and pulls up towards the ceiling on the higher strings. These are simply based on the room available on the fret board.
