How to do Vatayanasana | Horse Pose in Ashtanga Yoga

It’s easy to look at a pose like Vatayanasana and wonder how on earth your body will contort into that position– but when we break it down, it’s not too bad! And although balance is definitely a challenge in this one, we’ve got a few tips that’ll help you find stability and ease.
In this tutorial, we’re showing you how to do VATAYANASANA \ HORSE POSE as practiced in Ashtanga's Intermediate Series. You’ll learn the traditional (and unique) vinyasa cues and Sanskrit count as we take you through each step of the pose, breaking each part down so you know exactly what to do next. One of the biggest challenges in this posture is maintaining balance, so we share some tips to make finding that sweet spot a little easier, including a nuanced movement cue our late teacher gave directly to Jelena. Throughout the video, you’ll learn where to establish balance, how to reduce tension in the half lotus knee, and how to move through the arms to find more stability… and you’ll discover David’s favorite vinyasa too!
