Lydia Nobles is a New York-based conceptual artist who critiques societal constructs that affect gender. She uses identity and storytelling as a form of advocacy, exploring subjectivity through abstract art.
Her ongoing project, *As I Sit Waiting*, is a series of sculptures that addresses abortion access and reproductive advocacy. The New York Foundation for the Arts is the fiscal sponsor for the project. The series has been well-received, with pieces debuting in solo shows at SPRING/BREAK Art Fair (2023), Field Projects, and Ross-Sutton Gallery (2022). This past January, the Brooklyn Museum included two of her sculptures in *50 Years Since Roe: A Convening on Reproductive Justice: Abortion Stories USA*.
Nobles' work has also been featured in numerous group shows at places like the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, and the Border Project Space. Her art has been recognized in publications such as ArtNet News, *The New York Times*, and *The Guardian*.
She holds an MFA from Parsons School of Art and Design and a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design. She also earned a certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies from The New School, where she received the Gender and Sexuality Grant in 2017. She has completed artist-in-residence programs at Field Projects, Trestle Art Space, and Pink Noise Projects.
We sat down with Nobles to talk about her work and her commitment to social issues. Her practice is both a critique and a form of advocacy, using art to explore complex topics and start conversations. In our chat, Nobles shared insights into her creative process, the inspiration behind her sculptures, and her journey as a conceptual artist dedicated to challenging the status quo.
Lydia's work is socially conscious and visually compelling, using abstraction to give a voice to lived experiences and ongoing struggles for gender equality.
