The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle was published in 1997 and distributed on a small scale mostly by Eckhart Tolle himself. After the book was recommended by Oprah Winfrey it has been translated into 33 languages. As of 2009, it was estimated that three million copies had been sold in North America.
Ulrich Leonard Tölle was born in Lünen, Germany in 1948. One night in 1977, at the age of 29, after long periods of depression, Tolle says he experienced an "inner transformation" and came to peace with everything. He stayed with friends, in a Buddhist monastery, or slept rough on Hampstead Heath. His family thought him "irresponsible, even insane". He changed his first name from Ulrich to Eckhart; by some reports this was in homage to the German philosopher and mystic Meister Eckhart.
