US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell explains the Federal Open Market Committee’s decision to lower the policy interest rate by 25 basis points, reflecting a balance of risks in employment and inflation.
“The outlook for employment and inflation has not changed,” Mr Powell said.
“In support of our goals in light of the balance of risks to employment and inflation, today, the Federal Open Market Committee decided to lower our policy interest rate by a quarter percentage point.
“Available indicators suggest that economic activity has been expanding at a moderate pace, consumer spending appears to remain solid, and business fixed investment has continued to expand.”
