During the House Standing Committee on Economics hearing, I raised questions with the Reserve Bank of Australia regarding digital payments and card surcharges. These surcharges have been a persistent concern for consumers and small businesses, often applied without transparency and with little justification. Despite lots of discussion, the problem remains unresolved.
It should not take repeated prompting for the RBA to act. Australians deserve clarity and fairness in how payments are processed, yet the current system continues to permit unnecessary fees at the checkout. While I welcome the announcement of a review into Payments and Surcharges, it is long overdue.
This hearing is one step closer to ending the rort.
