Supplies:
An apple and apple cutter/knife
Liquids (of your choice--we used: salt water, orange juice, light-colored soda, dark-colored soda, tonic water, apple juice, lemon juice, and honey)
Cups/ziploc bags (1 for each liquid you're using)
When you cut into an apple, it begins to turn brown. This is called oxidation--a process that begins when the apple skin is broken and the apple is exposed to oxygen in the air. Let's see if we can find a liquid that will slow or prevent the apple from turning brown so we can still eat our apples!
1. Pour your liquids into their cups and label each one (we used tape and a marker)
2. Cut your apples into pieces and put a slice in each of your liquids. Save a piece to be the control and don't do anything to it--leave it exposed to the air so you can compare it to your other apple slices and see the effects.
3. Leave your apples in their liquids for 10 minutes! While you wait, think about what could happen to each slice. What will each liquid do?
4. Pull each slice out and examine it compared to the control. Talk about what you see!
5. If you'd like, put the slices back in for another 10 minutes and see what they look like after that.
6. Finally, go ahead and taste your apples! Which one works the best and tastes the best too?
More to try: Try other types of apples, and other fruits should work as well. Don't forget to try other liquids too!
