Ivan Müller, sometimes spelled Iwan Mueller (1786 in
Reval (Estonia) – 1854 in Bückeburg), was a clarinetist,
composer and inventor who at the beginning of the 19th
century was responsible for a major step forward in the
development of the clarinet, the air-tight pad.
He became a chamber musician in Saint Petersburg
before he was twenty.
Müller went on to work in Dresden, Berlin and Leipzig,
where he specialized in the basset-horrn, a type of low-
pitched clarinet.
In 1809, Müller performed to great acclaim on a clarinet
made to his own specifications. Müller moved to Paris
got a wealthy patron in the form of (Mr.) Marie-Pierre
Petit, and started mass-producing clarinets.
In 1812, Müller presented his new 13-key clarinet with
air-tight pads to the Paris Conservatoire, but they
weren't impressed. Nevertheless, Müller's new clarinet
with fully chromatic range became popular and became
the standard clarinet for much of the 19th century. It
was further developed into the Öhler system, the
prevalent system in Germany today. He was also, before
the famous Hyacinthe Klosé, principal clarinet at
the Théâtre Italien in Paris.

Italian composer who wrote 39 operas.

responsable d’un progrès majeur dans le développement
de la clarinette, le tampon hermétique.
Avant sa vingtième année il devint musicien de chambre
à Saint Petersbourg.
Müller travailla ensuite à Dresde, Berlin et Leipzig, où
il se spécialisa dans le cor de basset.En1809, Müller
joua avec grand succèssur une clarinette de son
invention. Müller alla à Paris où il obtint un excellent
modèle achevé par (Mr.) Marie-Pierre Petit, et
commença une production en série de clarinette. En
1812, Müller présenta son nouveau modèle à 13 clefs
avec tampons hermétiques au Conservatoire de Paris,
mais personne ne fut impressionné. Cependant, la
nouvelle clarinette de Müller avec sa tessiture
chromatique complète devint populaire et la clarinette
standard pendant une grande partie du 19 ème siècle. Elle
fut ensuite adaptée au système Öhler, le système
dominant aujourd’hui en Allemagnethe. Il fut aussi,

avant le fameux Hyacinthe Klosé, première clarinette au
Théâtre Italien à Paris.
