Unboxing Retron 3 HD NES Super NES Super Famicom MegaDrive Genesis HDMI Clone

In this video, we unbox and inspect the Hyperkin RetroN 3 HD NES, Super Nintendo/Super Famicom, MegaDrive/Genesis HDMI Clone System.

Hyperkin has been one of the largest manufacturer of clone retro video game systems for a long time. They started with AV-equipped systems, from the original Retron, Retron 2 which had both NES and SNES compatibility, and eventually, they released the Retron 3, an AV/Composite-equipped NES, SNES and Genesis clone system. In recent years, Hyperkin has gone back to these systems and updated them with better hardware, better connectors and pins, better controllers and, most importantly, HDMI outputs. The RetroN 3 HD has been designed to duplicate the performance of the NES, Super Nintendo, Super Famicom, MegaDrive, and Genesis systems. In reality, the RetroN 3 HD is more like a RetroN 5, but they already have one of those, don't they? But I get their point, and this promises to be compatible with a TON of games, and part of that compatibility is the ability to connect actual SNES/SFC, Genesis, and NES controllers. Inside the box, you do get both a Scout and Squire wired controller, however, there is only one of each included and no Cadet controllers are included for the NES-side of things. Along with the controllers, inside the box you'll also get a 3-foot HDMI cable, 6-foot micro USB cable for power, AV cable, and 5v 1A power brick. The entire system is well packed and equipped, I just really wish we got that NES controller too.

Upon initial inspection, the system was considerably heavier than what I expected. It was interesting that the power switch and system selector switch are 2 distinctly separate switches. Even on their own RetroN 2 HD, the switch to select the system also acts as the power switch. Move the switch into one position, the SNES side turns on; move it to the other side and the other system turns on. With the RetroN 3HD, the slide switch simply selects the system; There's a seperate power on/off switch. Not sure why they went this route, but it works and it is an interesting approach.

When test-fitting the cartridges, both the NES and Super NES/Super Famicom cartridge slots felt good. They were snug, but not overly tight. The Genesis/MegaDrive port, however, goodness it was a death grip! It was difficult to insert the cartridge, and damn near impossible to get it out. I know with Hyperkin's Perfect Pin Technology, as used on the MegaRetroN HD, did not have a death grip on cartridges. The RetroN 3 HD was way too tight on the carts, and something I hope frees up with use.
