I'm hanging out in chicken pens today, may as well share "why" with you guys.
Compensation Mating: Utilizing the individual expressed traits to aim at overall flock improvements and consistency. Ideally, breeding candidates share most traits on the positive side of the spectrum, then you compensate their possible weaknesses through the choice of their mate, during breeding selection.
Clan Mating: A group of birds that you hatch from. It's subjective and it depends... How picky were you in the clan formation?
Pair mating: Knowing the specific 2 parents of a particular group of hatching eggs, so that you can gauge hatch results down to the pair. It's the only method that shows who your strongest breeding stock is.
