Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says the United States’ absence from this year’s G20 summit underscores a major shift in global economic influence. Speaking in South Africa, Carney said the turnout, and Washington’s boycott, is “a reminder that the center of gravity in the global economy is shifting,” adding that the G20 must prioritize solidarity, equality, and sustainability.

The two-day summit in Johannesburg concluded with a symbolic moment: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa banged the traditional gavel to close the meeting, but no U.S. representative was present to receive it as the next G20 host. Carney criticized the growing retreat into geopolitical blocs, stressing that Canada sees the G20 as a crucial bridge at a time of global tension.
