(8 Mar 2017) US-backed Iraqi forces continued to fight their way into the heart of western Mosul on Wednesday, a day after the city's municipal complex was declared liberated by the country's top military commanders and US-led coalition officials.
The consistent advance - more than two weeks since the new push started to clear Mosul's western side of Islamic State group militants - has been a major blow to the extremists who once controlled nearly a third of Iraq.
Smoke could be seen on Wednesday rising above the Al-Tayaran neighbourhood, while military helicopters fired overhead
