Dynamics of warfare and society; How warfare and social structures interact and survive.

In this lecture, Dr. Zahra Kouzehgari from the Archéorient University said that Throughout history, warfare has shaped human societies, leaving profound impacts on social and political organization and playing a pivotal role in historical development. This video delves into the origins of organized warfare, which emerged around the fourth millennium BCE in the Ancient Near East, marking a significant turning point in human civilization. By the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age (ca. 1500-550 BCE), Southwest Asia underwent major social, cultural, political, and economic transformations, driven in part by escalating conflicts and shifting power dynamics.
Drawing on archaeological evidence, we examine how the end of this era was defined by the withdrawal of major powers, like Assyria and Urartu, and the rise of new forces, such as the Medes and Achaemenids. These shifts in power offer valuable insights into the social impacts of warfare, particularly within the context of confrontations between the structured societies of Mesopotamia and eastern Anatolia and the prehistoric societies in northwest Iran and the southern Caucasus.
This video explores two core questions: How did historical societies utilize warfare to shape social structures and maintain order? And how did these dynamics foster the rise of centralized powers, local chiefdoms, and the militarization of societies?
Moving beyond strategy and tactics, this analysis considers warfare as a mechanism for social and cultural evolution and political transformation. Through a dual approach, we reveal how the evolution of military institutions and shifts in warfare techniques and tactics contributed to foundational changes in social institutions, ultimately impacting the trajectory of ancient Southwest Asia.
