The Minaret of Jam in western Afghanistan stands on its own by the Hari river, in a narrow rocky valley flanked by mountains that rise up to 7,900 feet/2,400 metres. The tower is 213 feet/65 metres high and is built entirely of fired bricks. It is famous for its intricate brick, stucco and glazed tile decoration, which consists of alternating bands of geometric patterns and calligraphic verses from the Koran.
